Home Organization Tips: Declutter with Portable Storage Options

Spring Cleaning & Home Organization Work Together

Do you have belongings that sit around your house that haven’t been used in what feels like decades? You’ve been meaning to organize your home for months now, but you can’t bring yourself to toss out your wardrobe from the 80s, or that food processor you’re DEFINITELY going to use soon. Spring is fast approaching, which means many of you have been thinking about home organization already. But where do you start? Will you need to put some of your belongings in storage? We’re going to help you answer these questions.

1) Do You Need This? Can You Live Without it?

The first step to organize your home is decluttering. Going into each room in your house, look at your belongings and ask yourself the following questions:

  1. Is this something I need?
  2. Have I used this recently?
  3. Does this hold sentimental value?

These three questions will help you decide whether you should keep the item or not.  A good way to remember what you’re keeping and what you’re tossing out is to use different coloured post-it notes, one colour for keep, the other, toss.

2) The Toss Pile: Do you Donate, Sell, or Throw Away?

Once you’ve organized the items you’re going to throw away, make the conscious decision of whether or not to donate to a charity, sell your items, or just throw them away. If your item is in good shape and has good value, it would be wise to sell it, i.e. skiing gear. If your item is in good shape, but wouldn’t sell for very much, consider donating it to a local charity, i.e. clothing. Finally, if your item isn’t in good shape, throw it away.

3) The Keep Pile: Do You Keep It, or Put it into Storage?

By this step, you should have a good idea of what you need in your home on a daily basis. Anything you don’t need will be gone, and you will focus on what you need in your home, and what will be going into storage.
There will be things in your home that you won’t be able to part with, but it’s not something you need or use on a daily basis. You can maximize your living space by organizing these items elsewhere. Options to organize your belongings include keeping them in your crawlspace in the basement, or investing in a household storage container. With a storage container, you will have access to your belongings whenever you need them, however they will be stored outside the home. This keeps your home organized throughout the year.

4) Seasonal Household Items

All your seasonal belongings, such as Christmas lights, Halloween decorations, or other items you bring out for special occasions should be put into storage. When you only need some items once or twice a year, you can save a lot of space in your home by relocating them.

Congratulations, you’ve simultaneously decluttered and organized your home! Now, when you look for items you won’t be trudging through useless stuff that got in your way before. Cleaning is much easier, and you know that everything you need or use on a regular basis is in your home.
Just remember: home organization is a lifestyle choice. Once you’ve passed the initial steps of decluttering, you’ll need to keep it up. We can accumulate a lot in just a month, so in order to keep your home organized say goodbye to items that have no use. And remember, your storage container is the best of both worlds. You have an organized home, and you get to keep your belongings.
